What we were learning — through The New York Times, Newsweek and Roll Call — was ugly. Davis Manafort, the lobbying firm owned by McCain’s campaign manager, Rick Davis, had received $15,000 a month from Freddie Mac from late 2005 until last month. This was in addition to the $30,000 a month that Davis was paid from 2000 to 2005 by the so-called Homeownership Alliance, an advocacy organization that he headed and that was financed by Freddie and Fannie to fight regulation.
The McCain campaign tried to pre-emptively deflect such revelations by reviving the old Rove trick of accusing your opponent of your own biggest failings. It ran attack ads about Obama’s own links to the mortgage giants. But neither of the former Freddie-Fannie executives vilified in those ads, Franklin Raines and James Johnson, had worked at those companies lately or are currently associated with the Obama campaign. (Raines never worked for the campaign at all.) By contrast, Davis is the tip of the Freddie-Fannie-McCain iceberg. McCain’s senior adviser, his campaign’s vice chairman, his Congressional liaison and the reported head of his White House transition team all either made fortunes from recent Freddie-Fannie lobbying or were players in firms that did.

WASHINGTON — A "culture of substance abuse and promiscuity" existed in the federal agency that handles royalty payments from oil companies, including sexual encounters between government employees and industry representatives, according to a memorandum released today.
The Interior Department's Inspector General, who has been investigating the U.S. Minerals Management Service's Royalty-In-Kind program, said government employees who were supposed to be regulating the oil companies were engaging in drug use and having sex with industry contacts.
"Several staff admitted to illegal drug use as well as illicit sexual encounters," Inspector General Earl Devaney wrote in a Sept. 9 memo to Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne released today.
Devaney pointed to one supervisor in the Royalty-In-Kind program — under which oil companies are allowed to pay royalties owed to the federal government in actual oil rather than cash — who "engaged in illegal drug use and had sexual relations with subordinates, and in consort with industry."

Witnesses told police Mr Walendowski appeared to have been drinking
A 56-year-old man from the Midwestern US state of Wisconsin has been arrested after shooting his lawn mower in his garden because it would not start.
Keith Walendowski was charged by police in Milwaukee with disorderly conduct and possession of a sawn-off shotgun.
He could face a fine of up to $11,000 and a maximum prison sentence of six-and-a-half years if convicted.
Police officers said Mr Walendowski had told them: "It's my lawn mower and my yard, so I can shoot it if I want."
Police found the shotgun, a handgun and a stungun, as well as ammunition, when they detained Mr Walendowski in the basement of his house.
Witnesses told police that he appeared to have been drinking.
The lawn mower was found sitting outside Mr Walendowski's house, which he shares with his mother, with the rubbish on Friday.
A local retailer said that Mr Walendowski might now have difficulty getting his lawn mower repaired.
"Anything not factory recommended would void the warranty," said Dick Wagner, of Wagner's Garden Mart in Milwaukee

Just got back from DC ,spent 5 days there with my son in law and daughter. On Thanksgiving Shannon and I had a great time cutting veggies while listening to alice's restaurant. Pual's mom came out also and we all had a meal that couldn't be beat.

The next day we all went out and saw 3:10 to Yuma, where not unlike some of the characters in the western I first became involved in a conspiracy. Unwitting at first but after discovering the true genius of the plot. I threw in my lot, with the master mind of the caper, Pual's Mom.
Who in an even better analogy to one of the movie's characters, outlaw Ben Wade,
a heartless killer and gang leader with great knowledge of the Bible . OK maybe the killer and gang leader stuff is a stretch but she does have great knowledge of the Bible.

Here's a mistake people make every day. Before I studied linguistics, I used to make it too. You want some extension, say 432. You dial the main number, and the receptionist answers with the usual, "Good morning" or "Columbo Wigmakers, how may I help you?". You answer, "432." The receptionist says, "I'm sorry, what extension was that?"
Know why? Well, unless the receptionist was just talking to a person with approximately the same size vocal cavity as you, she or he has no hope of understanding you.
Vowel sounds are made by using the mouth as a resonating cavity, and distinguished from each other by such things as the position of the tongue, which changes the resonance. Since vocal cavities vary in size, we can understand a person's vowels only in relation to their other vowels. The pitch of a large man and a small child are very different. In fact, a larger person's high vowel in "see" could have the same pitch as a smaller person's low vowel in "saw."
Humans are amazingly good at understanding speech, and only need about two syllables to pick up a speaker's vocal range. This means that the first two syllables in a conversation will generally not be understood, and this is particularly true on the phone where the listener has no cue as to the speaker's size.
So give the receptionist a break. If you start by saying, "Hello," or even "Extension 432," you will suddenly find yourself much better understood.

spent time with mom today, got cake,chicken, asparagus, rice ,socks and sweaters
i liked the cake, chicken, asparagus and sweaters, but the rice and socks tasted funny.

though what i always enjoy most are her stories. she is seventy now, and you know how old people tell folksy, wisdom filled tales? well she doesn't, she may have some but iv'e never herd one from her. I always love it when she tells me any thing to do with her computer- she once told me she could not save documents because her printer was not working. when I told her to just save them in a folder and remember where she put them, she looked confused and said that's what she does but how could that be done without a printer?
it was then that I discovered that she only saves docs by printing them out,putting them in folders and the remembering where she put them.
I fixed the printer.

yesterday she told me about her latest traumatic run in with that printer. I won't go into details but ya know when your printer just keeps printing? now picture that happening to my mom. If you have met my mom you are now giggling.

I also spoke at length with my wonderfull Daughter, but as my only reader she likely doen't need a recap

GAUHATI, India — Six Asiatic wild elephants were electrocuted as they went berserk after drinking rice beer in India's remote northeast, a wildlife official said today.
Nearly 40 elephants came to a village on Friday looking for food. Some found beer, which farmers ferment and keep in plastic and tin drums in their huts, said Sunil Kumar, a state wildlife official.
They got drunk, uprooted a utility pole carrying power lines and were electrocuted in Chandan Nukat, a village nearly 150 miles west of Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya state
